One of the most important tools for a hobbyist or professional is a good soldering iron. However, when it comes to choosing one, there are many factors that you should consider in order to find the right one for your needs. To help you with this process, we put together this buyer’s guide on Weller P2KC Soldering Irons!

The Weller Professional Self-igniting Cordless Butane Soldering Iron is a lightweight, compact cordless butane soldering and hot air tool. This P2KC has fast heat-up for high productivity, melts solder in less than 40 seconds; gas capacity allows up to 1 hour of continuous use, which is ample for most jobs. Refills in less than 20 seconds so you can stay on the job and with an automatic cut-off switch when cap replaced to be safe. Also, this product can be used as a mini torch! Bonus: it’s ESD safe, too, to protect sensitive computers from static discharge while soldering.

The first thing that you will want to think about when looking at these irons is what type of work they will be used for. If you need something that can handle tough jobs and thick wire, then go with an industrial iron like the Weller WLC100 industrial iron. However, if precision and detail work is your goal, then take a look at the Weller P2KC Soldering Iron.

The next thing to think about is the type of power supply you need. If you have this iron in a remote location, consider getting something with a cordless design, such as the Weller 9400PKS Soldering Gun. The good news is that all-electric irons can be used while plugged into an outlet, so if proximity isn’t your main concern, it’s up to you! However, we recommend looking for one that has a built-in stand and handles for easier use.

Next, look at whether or not your soldering gun needs any special features like temperature control. This will make it much easier when working on different materials because they’ll require different levels of heat depending on what they’re made of.

Finally, it’s essential to make sure that you look for an iron with a high wattage and low heat setting so that the different materials don’t get too hot or cool when soldering them together. The Weller P-Series has all these features!

Pros and Cons of Weller P2KC

Pros

  • ESD safe to protect sensitive components
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • The Weller soldering iron heats up quickly and is ready to use in less than a minute
  • It has a temperature control setting (which is necessary when working with different materials) to make sure you don’t get the material too hot or cold

Cons

  • There are no cons about this iron, but if I had to say one thing, it would be that it doesn’t come with an auto power-off function that may drain your batteries over time if not turned off manually after each use. But other than that, there’s nothing bad to say!

Why use a Weller P2KC Soldering Iron?

There are many reasons to purchase a Weller P-Series iron, but I’ll list just a few of my favorites.

It’s easy to use! It has the power selector knob and temperature control button conveniently positioned on top for ease of access. The wattage ranges from 25W – 75W, which is perfect for most normal soldering jobs. What makes it even better is that you can also adjust and set your own preferred setting by turning the dial in one direction or another depending on what type of material you’re working with (basically an “easy” mode). And there’s no need to worry about accidentally overheating because it automatically shuts off after 60 minutes without activity, so safety is always the first priority.

Tips on How to Solder with a Weller P2KC

Stick with just one type of solder if possible, so you don’t have to worry about picking up too hot or not enough heat, but always read your instruction manual before attempting anything new.

Your irons’ temperature will affect how fast your solder will melt, so be sure that you’re at an appropriate setting based on what material you’re working with (you can adjust this within 60 seconds).

The wattage ranges from 25W-75W, which means you can use a variety of materials for different projects.
The iron tips are made from brass which is perfect because it won’t corrode or break down over time, so your work will be safe and sound (plus maintenance is easy).

If the temperature gets too high, turn off the wall outlet’s power to avoid any mishaps.

When using solder with lead content, make sure that you’re up-to-date on safety protocol, and don’t try this if you haven’t yet taken appropriate courses to protect yourself and others around you.

Be aware that this soldering pen has an automatic shutoff function after 60 minutes without activity, but there are no worries about overheating since it turns off automatically.

The Best Way to Store Your Weller P2KC Soldering Iron

A large, dedicated box or drawer with plenty of room is recommended for storing your Weller P-Series Soldering Iron. The drawers should be made from wood or metal so that the soldering iron doesn’t get scratched up when you’re opening and closing it. You may also want to use a plastic organizer tray in order to keep the bits sorted out nicely and close at hand.

The best way to store is traditionally on its side horizontally inside an open container, perhaps one used specifically for storage purposes only (or not likely to be reused). It’s important that these containers are fireproof as well as corrosion-resistant; consider purchasing stainless steel bins if they aren’t already available in your workshop!

Final Thoughts

Weller P2KC soldering iron is a great tool for any hobbyist, DIY-er, or professional. I must say that this was a pretty tough one to choose from, but it came down between Weller and Hakko FX888D for me. The cost of the Hakko is roughly $40 more than the P2KC series, which made my decision easier in favor of Wellers!

I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a reliable soldering iron to consider the Weller P-Series. The only thing I would say that it needs work on, which may be addressed in future versions of this model, are some minor design flaws. For example, the placement and size of the power cord could have been better placed as well as redesigned so you can replace them with your own cables if necessary.

This device is perfect for short circuit repairs or even through-hole PCB assemblies! Definitely worth considering over other models out there!

  1. I like the Weller P2KC because it refills very quickly, it heats up in a jiffy so you won’t waste time waiting on it (you actually have to be ready to start working fast) and it has an ESD safe for protecting those sensitive parts.
