Interesting Blog but you missed some of the best battery operated irons ever made. They have been on the market for many years and use a different technology than the ones you have tested. One of the basic concerns with any iron on a PC board is isolating the current surge so as not to take out any components while soldering. You might want to take a look at the Iso-Tip hand held soldering irons from Senasys. They are a complete different animal and they are currently upgrading their complete product line. They have a crazy fast heat up (10 sec.) and a large number of tip styles. They are a much different product than the ones you have tested and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the performance difference. They are a professional tool and have been used by the military in aviation since 1970 I believe. They have also been a standard for production lines. The name Iso-Tip comes from the isolated tip design which protects from component damage during soldering and the tip design is completely different from the ones tested.
